Moving countries can involve losses that don’t have a clear ending. Grief in migration is often not about death, but about things like identity, closeness to family, ease of communication, social roles, and imagined futures. Because these losses can be ongoing, ambiguous, and socially unrecognized, immigrant grief can feel confusing – or persist in the background for a long time.
This workshop is for anyone with migration experience who wants to better understand what they may be carrying, and learn practical ways to relate to it with more clarity, grounding, and self-compassion.
In this workshop, you will learn why immigrant grief can feel different, and practice simple tools to support yourself through it.
You will:
- Identify and name different forms of loss in migration (beyond death)
- Get introduced to key concepts such as ambiguous loss, disenfranchised grief, and the non-linear nature of grief
- Follow a case story (Marek) to explore how grief can emerge gradually and without a clear triggering event
- Practice a short grounding body scan and other gentle reflective exercises
- Work with the inner critic and “gratitude pressure” using the principle that “two things can be true at the same time”
- Reflect on personal resources and what it can look like to “live alongside grief” – and leave with take-home insights
The workshop combines short psychoeducation with guided reflection in a respectful and inclusive space. It will be hosted by Pola Koba, a psychologist working with internationals living in Copenhagen.

The workshop will be guided by:
Psychologist Pola (MSc Clinical Psychology), who brings both clinical expertise and lived experience as an immigrant to her work with internationals facing anxiety, stress and adaptation challenges.
