Postpartum Anxiety

“Being a mother is learning about strengths you didn’t know you had and dealing with fears you didn’t know existed.” — Linda Wooten

What is expected to be the happiest time in many parents’ lives is often accompanied by postpartum depression (PPD), and its lesser known sister – postpartum anxiety (PPA), suspected to affect nearly 1 in 5 new mothers. In Denmark, specific statistics are limited, but global research reveals that postpartum anxiety is a common yet often overlooked challenge. Studies suggest that it may affect up to 40% of new mothers, with immigrant and refugee women facing even higher risks due to factors like lack of screening and support (source). Research also highlights that 27.8% of Danish women and 54.7% of immigrant women were not screened for postpartum depression, a related condition, which points to gaps in care (source). Additionally, refugee mothers in Denmark report higher rates of postpartum depression, with a prevalence of 33.5%, which is significantly higher than in the non-migrant population (source).

This workshop will explore the realities of postpartum anxiety, its impact on mothers, especially in migrant communities, and the urgent need for better mental health care and targeted interventions. After a short presentation on the topic, the workshop will be interactive, providing an opportunity for discussion, shared experiences, and practical strategies to support those affected. Join us as we delve into the importance of recognizing and addressing postpartum anxiety for the well-being of both mothers and their families.

You do not need to be a mother to attend. Partners, friends, colleagues are especially welcone and will enrich the perspectives in the conversation.
